It is extremely difficult for me to look at this picture and write about Molly.

As you know she got killed on Nov 3 2011.

I don't guess that a person should love a dog (or any pet) but I really don't care what is proper or what other people think. -----" I loved Molly" ------

Only a pet lover can understand that statement.

This was and is Molly's blog and now I only wished that I had written more about

our lives together.

Our lives were wonderful....God loaned me an outstanding companion.

I cared for her as best as I could while I had her and I know that she is in heaven

with the rest of my loved ones and when I get up there,

I know that she will be among the first to greet me.

What a reunion I will have.

I really want to continue her blog.

I have gotten a new dog... I went to the animal shelter and rescued a year old Border Collie, I named him 'Willy'

Willy is jet black. I wanted a dog as opposite from Molly as possible. Soon I will add a picture of him.

Willy is doing a fine job of replacing Molly. He is quite a good dog.

He seems to know that he is a rescue, and grateful for his new lease on life also, he is smart. Molly was a rescue and I really believe that dogs understand.

I don't think that things just happen. I believe that there is a predetermined destination for all life. One thing I do know is that all things were created by GOD and for GOD.

So as I heal from the pain of losing Molly. I will be sharing Willy with you as time goes

on. Because I do plan to go on with life and grow older.

Please Don’t Call Me a “Dog Whisperer”

Each year, Jim, myself, and the dogs host a Christmas Eve EveParty for our friends on December 23. It’s a night when many of our out-of-town friends we see only once a year are in town for the holidays and not otherwise booked with family obligations. It is my favorite night of the year — a nice, mellow, fun evening with some of my favorite people (and dogs).

I try to keep the party fun for my dogs, too (and last year, a client dog joined the fun). I also know, that with a variety of tempting food dishes ALL OVER THE PLACE and wine-consuming partygoers leaving half-emptied plates on low-lying tables, that while I enjoy the fun, I cannot drop my guard. I have to watch my dogs at all times, in a state of constant readiness to manage a situation to prevent “bad” behavior (like jumping or countersurfing) and reinforce good behavior (like greeting politely, allowing for petting, etc.).

I prepare ahead of time. While I am busy prepping food and beverages for the party, I am also stuffing Kongs. When I buy groceries, I buy marrow bones. I know my dogs need things to keep them busy and therefore, out of trouble.

I also do occasional, very brief, and fun training sessions with them to teach them that paying attention to me when there are 40 people in the house is a VGT (Very Good Thing — for dogs).

We’ve been hosting this party for more than a decade now, and many friends have not missed a year. Many attended the first year we brought home Monte, my Saint Bernard. Ten months after adoption, he was much healthier than he was when he came to us and also much better behaved, but still had reactivity issues to being touched by strangers. He spent a lot of his first Christmas Eve Eve party crated. A few years later, those same guests were at our house where he would happily allow for appropriate petting in exchange for a tasty treat and would practice impulse control lying down while pieces of steak rained down around him, bouncing off his big head, slobber smacking on the kitchen floor. He was not crated: He was part of the party, having a great time.

One of my friends said, “Wow! He’s so much better behaved than he used to be. You’re like the ‘Dog Whisperer.’” She was beaming with the joy of having found what she thought was the perfect compliment.

That wasn’t the first or last time I heard the phrase. I’m sure they mean Cesar Millan and not Paul Owens (who is the “original Dog Whisperer,” having written a book by that name many years before National Geographic created its popular reality television show, and who is actually a very talented, dog-friendly trainer), which means I can’t possibly take the reference as a compliment.

Cesar and I both train dogs and their people. We both care deeply about helping dogs and people co-exist more peacefully. But that’s pretty much where the similarities end.

See, Monte would easily have made a great dog for an episode of the Dog Whisperer — Cesar would call him a “red zone” dog. He would bark and lunge, slobber flying everywhere, sometimes to the point of vomiting, when he’d see another dog on the leash. One time, my friend bent over him and smiled. In a time span measured in fractions of seconds, he had her skull in his mouth (and thankfully, showed unbelievable bite inhibition). He dragged me into city traffic after another dog one day, nearly putting me in the hospital. He was a strong, powerful dog with strong, powerful unwanted reactions to dogs and specific other situations with people.

At the time, I wasn’t a trainer. I was a dedicated pet owner and huge Cesar fan. I tried the techniques I saw on his show and found Monte’s problems worsened. I had the opportunity to chat with Cesar once after a seminar, and he suggested that I wasn’t “calm and assertive” enough. I felt discouraged and hopeless.

I was as skeptical as many dog owners are about the power of positive reinforcement to address reactivity and aggression. “Seriously?! You think a toy noisemaker and some treats are going to help this dog?” It didn’t “cure” the problem overnight, but we did see progress from the start. It was hard work. It required that we change our lifestyle and our thoughts about how dogs learn about the world.

But it worked. It worked so well that Monte was eventually able to enjoy play dates with carefully selected other dogs and even Christmas Eve Eve parties. It worked so well that I couldn’t stop learning more until I became a trainer myself.

On the surface, our results looked the same. Dogs that started out with extreme behavioral issues and their people were able to enjoy the types of lifestyles together that they’d hoped for. Under the surface, our results and process were extremely different. I achieved my goals without the use of fear, intimidation, choke chains, prong collars, leash pops, “taps” with the foot to the ribs, or pinning my dog to the ground. I did it with cooperation, not opposition.

As for results? To a trained eye, body language speaks volumes. Monte was not stressed. He was happy and relaxed, more worried about when he would receive his next treat or scratch as opposed to when he’d hear the next verbal “Tschhht!” or get the “touch” in the shoulder.

There is a cultural assumption that only trainers who use coercion can be successful in rehabilitating and modifying the behavior of dogs with extreme behavior problems — whether the dog has killed a number of small animals, has an established bite history with people or other dogs, or has torn the doors and windows out of the house as a result of separation anxiety. The second part of the myth is that trainers who eschew the use of coercion in favor of manipulating reinforcement opportunities only teach tricks to well-behaved dogs and allow dogs with behavior problems to die.

This is an myth. Most of the country’s top behavior consultants, including actual behaviorists (who have advanced degrees in behavioral sciences), rehabilitate “red zone” dogs every day, working with real-life dog owners, a treat pouch, and dog- and people-friendly techniques grounded in modern science. To me and all behavior consultants who use positive reinforcement to rehabilitate dogs with behavior issues, please don’t call us “Dog Whisperers” when you’d like to give a compliment. (Unless it’s followed by the disclaimer, “You know, the Paul Owen kind.” Then it’s okay.)

Well Billy has gone and done it now, first he and I were riding the scooter in Dearing Ga and a tornado dropped a large tree on us and busted Billy's head he passed out on me and I was cared for by a Sheriff in his home for 4 days while Billy was in the hospital. Talk about me worrying. We came out it ok and I found him.
Then we got ran off the road in our camper up in Asheville NC and he got hurt pretty bad and was in the hospital 6 days for that and they put me in a kennel. That I did not like at all.
I was so excited when he came and got me that I pissed all over us both. Billy did not mind that at all in fact I think some of the pee was him. I didn't get hurt that much in either accident. But he took me to the vet and I had a complete exam. Including an ass wipe. Doc said I was fine.
But we are laid up at Billy's son while he recovers. I have many friends here and this is farm country with plenty of rabbits, squirrels, deer, bobcats and bear to chase but he don't like it when I get in the mud puddles. I have had a million baths.
We were planning to go out west come spring, but to be honest with you I don't he is going to be able to continue roaming around like before because Billy has a bad heart condition now and I am just not able to take care of him in a manner of which he needs.
But we are happy because we are together, he spends a lot of time on the computer and I lie at his feet and nap ( I love to nap ) I guess after 5 years of traveling it is time for a little rest.

One thing I do know, the reason Billy is not dead is because GOD is not done with him yet.

Well the winter is almost, this has been an easy job keeping Billy safe and the USACE lake secure here in McCormick SC.
We have our choice next to go to Las Vegas NM or Kentucky and host for the summer. I want to go to NM but with the price of gas I am taking a wait and see what happens.

We have spent the summer in the Smoky Mtns. Now that it is comming winter we are packing up to head south for the winter, no we are not going to Flordia, I really think we will end up in Texas but stay tuned, there is no telling what adventure lies ahead for us.

Recent studies indicate that managing my weight can lead to a longer, healthier life. I will eat 25% more than I need, If Billy will leave it out, which can lead to obesity and illness for me and I know that Billy does not want that.

Billy prepares most of my chow, man can he cook. I love it and I know just what I am eating. Real beef, chicken, pork, lamb, fish and I really love the bones that I get sometime, I can snack all night on one.

But as you know we travel a lot and sometimes we have to eat on the run. That can cause a problem for Bill because he will not feed me commercial dog food. Sometimes he will stop at a vets office to buy my food, I like that because I get to go in and shop too. Using the amount stated on the back of the dog food package is a good guide for measuring the right amount for me to eat. Billy uses a scoop or measuring cup instead of filling my plate full. This controls the quantity and keeps me slim and fit. If I still seem hungry, he takes me to the veterinarian about the proper amount for me to eat. I swear I am afraid to sneeze around him because if I sneeze twice it is off to my Veterinarian or the nearest animal hospital. But sometimes when we are out traveling even if I am not feeling all that good I try to hide it from him, but most of the time he can tell anyway. If I become disinterested in the food he fixes me he takes it away and prepares me something else, boy have I got him fooled. He don't know it but he has me right where I want him. God knows I love him. Oh yes I know there is a God and I am going to heaven when I die. I can prove it just read your bible, now read the KJV. Not those other ones.

The Heart Attack

Billy has had a heart Attack, he doesn't realize that I can understand that something bad is wrong with him. He don't see why, I never get out of his way now or that I am always near and looking out for his well being. But he is good to me and always attempts to view my reasons for doing dog things. I can see the aurora that surrounds him. I can smell that part of his heart that has died.
I can hear that mushy sound of weakness in his heart. Yes I understand many things are changing with him. I sense that he is scared and not as sure of himself. Part of my job is to reassure him.
We live on this big farm, he is use to me being outside, exploring the big and small things in life like bugs and birds. And those mud puddles that I like so much but to save my soul I can't understand why he always gives me a bath when I just came out of the creek swimming and got fresh water, mud and a little trash on me. Oh well, who cares, I like to smell good and I do feel better.
I like it when we get in the camper and take the scooter, and just head out to a state or federal park for a camping trip that could last for a month sometimes, once we took off and didn't come home for 14 months. What a fun time that was. I made so many nice friends I will never forget Wally. He was my age and liked the same things I did. We picked Wally up at a rest area, someone had just set him out, he was tired and hungry and his ribs showed that he hadn't eaten for days but I shared my food and soon he was well and happy as could be. Later we found him a good home with this elderly couple. Wally is in South Carolina now living the life of Riley.
Billy and I never pass up someone or something in trouble, I really like that part of him. If someone is broken down on the side of the road we will always stop and help out.
But once he stopped to pick up a hitch hiker, even though the man was dressed nice I did immediately recognized that this was a bad man and I wouldn't let him in the camper. Billy tells everybody that story. I accept most people we help. But not that man he had evil intentions and there was no way I was going to let him hurt my beloved master. I would have died first. You can believe that.
While Billy is recovering from this heart attack, we are getting plenty of rest and it feels good but I can't wait till we get that white line fever again.

Chocolate is toxic to dogs

Christmas Presents can be Deadly for Dogs
I would like to advise everyone with dogs to think twice before following instructions on a gift that read do not open until Christmas.
A very nice family I met last night received a Christmas present from an acquaintance. They placed it, still wrapped, underneath their tree. Unbeknownst to them the package contained a pound and a half of dark chocolate.
Although the family had no way of knowing the package’s contents, their dog sniffed it out in short order. He consumed the entire block of chocolate and most of the wrapping.
Chocolate is toxic to dogs. Small amounts may cause no symptoms, or may cause mild agitation. Larger quantities can cause muscle spasms, high body temperature, and severe agitation. Fatal doses cause seizures, heart palpitations, and death.
This dog had consumed a potentially fatal dose. The family sought veterinary attention immediately. We were able to save the dog with intensive overnight management. But for much of the night a favorable outcome did not seem certain. Without prompt medical attention the dog certainly would have died.
In my mind, this story is a good reason to treat yourself to the pleasure of opening all of your gifts as you receive them.

Facebook meltdown

So much for Silicon Valley's latest get-rich-quick scheme. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has cancelled a plan to let employees cash out their shares early. In August, before the markets started to melt down and with Facebook worth $15 billion on paper, Zuckerberg unveiled a plan to let employees sell a small amount of their shares — no more than $900,000 or 10 percent of their stock holdings, whichever was less. The program, all but unheard of among Valley startups, was meant to appease employees who were agitating for some chance to make money from their shares. It was a revolutionary new way to reward employees, without having to go through an IPO or a sale.

The revolution is over, Zuckerberg told his company today. "I'm writing this note to let you know some bad news," he wrote in an email to all employees at the 800-person social-network startup this afternoon. "Despite a lot of work, we have not been able to finalize a plan for the employee stock sale we announced in August."

Facebook executives had been courting potential buyers for employees' shares since the summer. But as the value of Google tumbled from its high of $700 last year, would-be investors started asking questions about whether Facebook's value, too, had dropped. By last month, they were getting downright nervous.

Microsoft had invested $240 million in the company for a 1.6 percent stake in the company that valued all of Facebook at $15 billion, but that deal came with extras: Microsoft bought preferred shares, which get paid off first if the company's bought, and it also got an advertising deal with Facebook at the same time.

Facebook's common shares, meanwhile, have a value that put the whole company's worth at around $4 billion. Or they did. A source close to potential investors said they wanted to buy shares from employees at a lower valuation, or with guarantees similar to Microsoft's. To reward a small number of employees who had enough shares to benefit from the program, Zuckerberg would have had to give away something for nothing.

It's still a crushing blow to morale at the company that was once Silicon Valley's highest-flying startup. Facebook once had the pick of the world's best and brightest, hiring brilliant kids from college who had gone through school addicted to the social network.

So Zuckerberg's back to the original startup business plan: Make a big bet, and hope it pays off years later with an IPO or a sale. Facebookers will have to make the same bet, too. It's not as exciting as overturning Silicon Valley's financial order. But right now, just drawing a paycheck seems like a lucky thing.

I Treat my Dog’s Injured Nail?

My dog got her back paw caught in the door and her
whole nail came off. Now just the quick is
showing. I got the bleeding to stop but now it is
slimy and has a bad odor. Have you seen this before

Nail injuries are very common in dogs. They occur when nails snag on carpet or vegetation, or when a nail catches on any stationary object.

In some instances (such as the one described by the questioner), trauma to the nail causes the nail to come completely off. In other cases, the nail is torn partially off.

In either case, a trip to the vet is in order. Nails that have been partially torn off may need to be removed. Both types of injury can lead to infection. Melanie, I suspect that an infection is the source of the bad odor that is emanating from your dog’s nail. Antibiotics may be necessary to help her heal.

Also, both types of injury can be painful. Your vet can recommend pain killers to make your dog feel better.

Most nails grow back normally after nail injuries. However, in rare cases the nail grows back in an irregular fashion. This rarely harms the affected dog. However, you may have to pay special attention to the nail in question. It may require frequent trimming.

Giving Your Pet Medication

You've just been told that your pet will need to take medicine. You know how much to give that's appropriate for your particular animal and how many times per day. You understand all the instructions from the vet and have read all the instructions from the medicine manufacturer. But, now that it is time to actually give it to your pet, just how do you go about it?

Individual cats and dogs can be as good or as bad about taking medicine as individual people are. It's very frustrating when a pet will run away and hide, squirm out of your arms, or try to bite while you are attempting to pop a pill into his or her mouth. Why is it that it looks so simple when the veterinarian does it, but it's impossible to do at home?

My previous cat, Fluffy, had diabetes, heart trouble, and later, a host of other problems. Fortunately, he was a very calm, understanding animal. He would let me give him his insulin shot while he was working on the food in his bowl. Pills he wasn't keen about, but the particular pills he had, I could crush and add to his food, which he tolerated. Liquid medication was fairly easy with him, as he accepted my squirting it into his mouth with a dropper.

My current cat, Tig, is not so cooperative. He's very nervous and picky. Crushed pills in his food are not to his liking. And I have a very hard time keeping him still if I have to give him a pill or liquid medicine directly. It's amazing how strong a 17-pound cat can be when he wants to get out of your arms. Do you have a pet like that?

There are several techniques that may help you to administer medication to a pet. One method is to hide the pill in food. This is a popular method with dogs, but doesn't usually work with cats, as they often eat around the pill. You can try hiding the pill in a moist niblet. This sometimes works for cats. In fact, there are even moist treats specifically designed to hold a pill in the center; these come in dog and cat sizes and are offered online or at pet supply stores.

If food doesn't do the trick (or, if the medication is not to be given with food), then you'll need to give the medication directly to your pet. This is when it can get difficult.

The first focuses on how to give a cat a pill, from putting it in food, to giving it directly with you fingers, to using a "pill gun" (available from your veterinarian).

In 1969 a Vietnam veteran found it very hard to get a job. I was.

So with $100 dollars worth of tools and an old ford truck I started my own auto repair business.

At first my family dang near starved.

But I kept trying.

I have never had a public job.

I never got a handout or drew unimployment.

I have never been unemployed.

I never looked back.

I created five very sucessful businesses.

That my friends is the American way.

Now I am Retired.

I want to meet you, in person, and if that is not possible, then we can meet right here online,
